Automating Universal Credit

About

Introduction

How have welfare policies shaped the design of Universal Credit and how does automation in turn shape the way UC policy is carried out?

How do claimants interact with automated and digitised components of Universal Credit?

What impacts do people feel automation and digitisation has had on their ability to claim, access, understand and contest payments?

What design changes might claimants want of the system so that it best supports them?

Using fieldwork, interviews with claimants and public stakeholders, the project will map this system’s complex interactions of technology and policy.

This three-year study on the automation of welfare in the UK began in January 2022 and receives support from the UK's Economic and Social Research Council.
